Clash in England: Bangladesh Dream of Scripting a New Chapter of History
by Maksuda Lisa (Dhaka Bureau)
The curtain rises today on the highly anticipated ‘ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026’, the most prestigious tournament in global women’s cricket. Featuring 12 elite teams, this spectacular global showpiece will unfold across the scenic cricket grounds of England and Wales from June 12 to July 5. In the opening match at the historic Edgbaston stadium in Birmingham, host nation England will lock horns with Asian powerhouse Sri Lanka. The match is scheduled to commence at 11:30 PM Bangladesh Time. To make the opening ceremony unforgettable, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has lined up a spectacular cultural show and illumination display led by Emma Kingston and Jigi Stralen, stars of the world-renowned musical ‘Wicked’.
A Tournament of Records and Dominance
The journey of the Women’s T20 World Cup began back in 2009 in England with just eight teams, where the hosts’ clinical performance earned them the inaugural title. Over the years, the global popularity of women’s cricket has reached staggering heights. A testament to this growth was the 2020 World Cup final in Melbourne, which witnessed a monumental turnout of over 86,000 spectators- a historic record in women’s sports.
In this biggest-ever edition, 12 teams are divided into two competitive groups:
* Group A: Australia, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands.
* Group B: England, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Scotland.
The tournament will feature two high-stakes semifinals at The Oval in London on June 30 and July 2, culminating in the grand finale on July 5 at ‘Lord’s’- the Makka of Cricket- where the new world champions will lift the ultimate crown.
From the Record Books: Australia stands as the most decorated team in the tournament’s history, clinching the title 6 times out of the 9 editions. England, West Indies, and reigning champions New Zealand have lifted the trophy once each. New Zealand’s Suzie Bates remains the leading run-scorer in tournament history, while Australian talisman Ellyse Perry dominates the bowling charts as one of the most successful World Cup performers.
The Title Contenders
According to cricket pundits, Australia remains the prime contender to defend their legacy due to their vast experience and unmatched big-match track record. However, England will look to maximize their home-soil advantage, and India, with their meteoric rise over the past decade, enters as a formidable title threat. Furthermore, an in-form South Africa and reigning champions New Zealand possess the tactical depth to dismantle any opponent on their day.
The Tigresses Stand on the Precipice of History
Since making their debut in the 2014 edition, Bangladesh has grown by leaps and bounds, arriving on English soil with their most mature and self-assured squad to date. Shifting away from an era where merely competing against elite nations was considered an achievement, Nigar Sultana Joty’s side steps onto the field with a clinical winning mentality.
Bangladesh’s Strengths and Group Stage Equations:
* Leadership & Experience: Captain Nigar Sultana Joty, entering her fourth T20 World Cup and her third consecutive tournament as skipper, remains the linchpin of the batting lineup and safe behind the stumps. The tactical maturity of veterans Fahima Khatun and Sharmin Akhter Supta will provide invaluable guidance to the youngsters.
* The Bowling Arsenal: Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter, a former world number one in the ICC rankings, is the trump card of the Tigresses’ bowling attack. While spin remains their primary weapon, the English tracks will require the seamers to step up and deliver breakthroughs.
* The Realistic Roadmap: Securing a comprehensive victory against the Netherlands in the opener and triumphing over arch-rivals Pakistan are paramount for Bangladesh. If Joty’s team can secure these two wins and pull off an upset against any of the three Group A giants- Australia, India, or South Africa- they will pave the way for a historic, maiden semifinal appearance.
In this new era of women’s cricket, Bangladesh, under the astute leadership of Nigar Sultana Joty, is fully prepared to shed the ‘underdog’ tag and establish itself as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
