On that fateful day in Darwin, the sun rose over Australia just as it always had. Sunlight glistened across the lush green outfield of Marrara Oval, and the stands were filled with the familiar self-assurance of the home supporters. Yet, as the day drew to a close, a new saga was inscribed across the Darwin horizon- a story of Bangladesh’s triumph. On Australian soil, where victory had eluded them for 23 long years, Bangladesh defeated the hosts by 9 wickets, throwing open a new, golden chapter in their sporting history.
Stepping onto Australian soil to play a Test match after 23 years, the red-and-green squad faced a daunting trial by fire. Under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, the team not only passed the test with flying colors but dismantled the host nation within four days, sending a resounding message across the globe: even in Australian conditions, Bangladesh is no longer just a participant, but a formidable force capable of snatching victory.
Tanjid’s History and the Epic of Darwin
The brightest brushstroke on this monumental canvas was painted by young prodigy Tanjid Hasan Tamim. In only the second Test match of his career, Tanjid rose to extraordinary heights by scoring a maiden century in challenging Australian conditions. His elegant, classic knock of 101 runs off 197 balls did not merely etch his name in gold; it rewrote the history books of Bangladeshi cricket.
This stands as the first-ever Test century by a Bangladeshi batsman on Australian soil. Previously, during the inaugural Test at Marrara Oval in 2003, Australia’s Darren Lehmann (110) and Steve Waugh (100*) had reached three figures. Twenty-three years later, Tanjid altered the course of history at the exact same venue. The record for the first Test century by a visiting batter at Marrara Oval now proudly belongs to him.
Player of the Match: Hasan Mahmud (9 wickets in the match)
Hasan’s Fire and Miraz’s Web of Spin
While Tanjid’s bat humbled the Australian pace attack, fast bowler Hasan Mahmud and all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz laid a rock-solid foundation with the ball. In the first innings, Hasan Mahmud’s blistering pace and swing dismantled the powerful Australian lineup for just 198 runs. Snagging 6 wickets for 55 runs, the pace sensation set the tone for the tour right from the outset.
In response to Australia’s first innings total, Tanjid’s century, combined with a captain’s knock of 84 from Najmul Hossain Shanto and a resilient 65 from Miraz, propelled Bangladesh to a commanding total of 426 runs. A massive first-innings lead of 228 runs handed complete control of the match to the visitors.
In the second innings, Cameron Green offered resistance with a century (104) for Australia, but Miraz extinguished any hopes of a comeback through his spellbinding spin. Miraz picked up 5 wickets for 66 runs to bowl out the hosts for 284. With a match haul of 9 wickets, Hasan Mahmud sealed a dominant bowling display across both innings.
A Story of Resilience and Transformation
In the warm-up match preceding the Darwin Test, Bangladesh suffered a crushing blow, being bowled out for a mere 54 runs. Yet, within a matter of days, that same side elevated its confidence to conquer world-champion Australia on their home turf in just four days. It stands as a testament to the fact that mental toughness and collective belief are the ultimate deciders in sport.
Chasing a modest target of just 57 runs, Bangladesh made swift work of the final hurdle. Although Tanjid fell early, Mominul Haque (30*) and Shadman Islam (25*) ensured there were no further stumbles. Bangladesh crossed the finish line in just 14.2 overs with 9 wickets in hand. As Mominul struck the winning boundary, the red-and-green flag of Bangladesh fluttered proudly against the twilight sky of Darwin.

Global Media and International Reaction
This triumph has sparked widespread applause across the international sporting community. Foreign news outlets have lauded the result as one of the greatest achievements in Bangladesh’s Test cricket history. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto described it as the team’s ‘greatest victory’.
Meanwhile, Australian captain Pat Cummins graciously acknowledged the defeat, stating, ‘Bangladesh outplayed us in virtually every department of the game.’ Australian media outlets have raised serious questions regarding the national team’s preparation, batting failures, and future selection policies.
This marks Bangladesh’s second Test victory over Australia- the first coming in Dhaka back in 2017. However, the victory in Darwin carries a far deeper significance because it was achieved on Australian soil, where success had previously felt unattainable. The fiery pace of Hasan Mahmud, the spin wizardry of Miraz, the composure of Shanto, and the historic ton by Tanjid have collectively heralded Bangladesh’s rise to a new stature in world cricket.
