Another glorious feather has been added to the cap of Bangladesh cricket. Tamim Iqbal, one of the country’s greatest-ever openers, former captain, and the current President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has been elected as an Honorary Life Member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the traditional custodian of cricket.
In an official announcement at Lord’s in London, the MCC confirmed the induction. Alongside Tamim Iqbal, this prestigious honor was bestowed upon New Zealand’s legendary women cricketers, Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, former Australian cricketer and commentator Mel Jones, and India’s Test specialist batter Cheteshwar Pujara.
With this rare international recognition, Tamim Iqbal etches his name into the history books once again. He becomes only the fourth Bangladeshi overall, and the second Bangladeshi cricketer after Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, to receive this prestigious Honorary Life Membership from the MCC. Previously, Bangladesh’s Raisuddin Ahmed, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza were honored with this distinction.
From Lord’s Honors Board to BCB President: An Extraordinary Journey
Since making his Test debut in 2008, Tamim has amassed 5,134 runs in 70 Tests for Bangladesh, which stands as the second-highest in the country’s Test history. In 2010, at this very Lord’s Cricket Ground, he smashed a magnificent and aggressive century against England, immortalizing his name on the historic Lord’s Honors Board.
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), Tamim remains Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer with a record 8,357 runs in 243 matches. With over 15,000 runs across all three formats of international cricket, Tamim was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2011 by the prestigious Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, alongside being recognized as Wisden’s Test Cricketer of the Year.
Recently, Tamim transitioned from the cricket pitch to cricket administration. Following his victory in the BCB elections, he assumed office as the youngest-ever president in the board’s history. Since taking charge, he has been highly active in reshaping the country’s cricket structure and driving the sport forward on the field.
Standing by the Women’s Team
BCB President Tamim Iqbal is currently staying in the United Kingdom. His visit is aimed at providing moral support and cheering from the stands for the Bangladesh women’s cricket team competing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. He attended the matches against India and Pakistan, and was present in the stands to support the Tigresses in their final group-stage match against South Africa at Lord’s. Off the field, the newly-elected president has been in constant communication with the coaching staff and management to keep the players motivated.
A Warm Welcome from the MCC
Welcoming the new members, MCC Chief Executive and Secretary Rob Lynch stated in a briefing, ‘We are delighted to welcome five outstanding individuals as our new Honorary Life Members. Their lifelong commitment and exceptional contribution to the game of cricket make them thoroughly deserving of this honor. We look forward to welcoming them to Lord’s as members of the MCC in the future.’
After rewriting record books with his on-field performances, Tamim has now proven his international stature as a cricket administrator. This MCC Honorary Life Membership undoubtedly opens a new horizon in his illustrious career and brings immense pride to the sporting arena of Bangladesh.
