What began with high hopes and promises ended without concrete roadmaps to end forest destruction and fossil fuel use, while geopolitical divisions once again highlighted the disconnect between those calling for climate action at COP30 and those defending economic interests, particularly those of the fossil fuel industry.
The first COP in the Amazon rainforest was supposed to develop an action plan to end forest destruction by 2030, and after the 2035 climate action plans proved dangerously insufficient, COP30 was also supposed to develop a Global Response Plan to address global warming. It did neither.
In unison, the main international environmental associations, from Greenpeace to Fridays for Future to Extinction Rebellion, strongly denounced the dangerousness of the situation and the need for immediate grassroots action to bring the urgency of a global change of system and direction back to the attention of governments and society.
