Groups fighting for prosecutor Delia Espinoza

Good governance is a right. A new day of street protests was staged today by various groups from Generation Z, the Callao Bloc, the CGTP Callao (General Confederation of Peruvian Workers), the Ama sua ama quella Independent Bloc, workers, social activists, the alternative press, and self-organized groups, who gathered in front of the Attorney General’s Office to support the reinstatement of prosecutor Delia Espinoza, an icon of the fight against corruption and the balance of power, which is currently under threat in the country.

Wielding whips, the groups convened by the Callao Bloc demanded the reinstatement of prosecutor Delia Espinoza, who was slated to assume the position of Attorney General. However, the court granted the National Board of Justice (JNJ) two more days to reinstate Espinoza, and simultaneously, the Congress of the Republic approved a report to disqualify her for 10 years for alleged unconstitutional violations.

“I will go to the full Congress and they will listen to me, always speaking the truth, as I have always done. They have to summon me; they have already violated my fundamental rights enough. Since the subcommittee on constitutional accusations, we have not been afforded due process. It is political revenge for acting within the law, for pursuing corruption and crime. They are desperate to get rid of me, but I will continue fighting,” Espinoza declared.

Population demands a government free of corruption

The defense of the prosecutor represents for the citizens the fight to maintain one of the few government institutions and officials free of corruption.

Daniel Gutierrez (Callao Bloc) told Pressenza: “They are arbitrarily blocking her reinstatement; that is their goal, to arrest the righteous, because Delia Espinoza is investigating acts of corruption within the government. That is why they want to remove her from office, to disqualify her for 10 years, so that this government can continue stealing from and plundering the entire country and passing laws against the people. We don’t want corruption, that is why we organized ourselves. If they disqualify her, Fujimorism will remain in power for another 20 years.”

Grimaldo Ríos (Technical Secretary of the Citizens’ Coalition for Life): “To truly fight crime, we must have an autonomous and decisive prosecutor’s office. The pro-crime laws passed by Congress favor criminality, and today, those who resist the reinstatement of Dr. Delia Espinoza are also complicit in crime. They want a Public Prosecutor’s Office that favors the crimes of members of Congress and all organized crime groups.”

(Young Leaders for Peru – JLP): “I support a Public Prosecutor’s Office that is independent of the corrupt pact. Delia wanted to go against the pact and against Fuerza Popular, that’s why they’re doing this to her. And all the officials who are against the pact somehow end up out. We must continue raising awareness with #NotForThem.”

Víctor Huaranja (Callao Dignity Front): “Criminal organizations are taking over all of Peru’s institutions, especially the justice system. The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Judiciary are resisting to preserve what little democracy we still have. We are in greater danger now that Keiko Fujimori and her associates have seized control of the institutions and are going to hold a fraudulent election, ensuring that on April 12th we only receive the death certificate of the elections. Let’s go out and fight the criminals.”

Jean Piers (Ama Sua Ama Quella Collective): “Today, as a member of Generation Z, we join all the struggles. Currently, it is the corrupt, the white-collar criminals who are taking over the prosecutor’s office. What justice can we expect for our people if the corrupt are seizing power? That is why we demand the reinstatement of Dr. Delia Espinoza. The whip is meant to correct the authorities. If they haven’t been corrected since childhood, we, the young people, are here to correct them. We are a generation that will do it; we have the authority as the Peruvian people. We cannot allow the same corrupt individuals to govern us.”
