Bangladesh scripted a historic cricketing fairytale on Thursday, stunning the six-time world champions and global cricket powerhouse, Australia. In a rain-interrupted encounter at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, the Tigers clinical 5-wicket victory sealed their first-ever bilateral ODI series win (One Day International) against the Aussies with one match to spare. Following an 86-run victory in the series opener, this consecutive triumph marks a monumental chapter in Bangladesh’s cricket history.
3 Wickets for 0 Runs: A Historic Collapse for the Aussies
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Australia was immediately rattled by a ferocious Bangladeshi pace onslaught. Taskin Ahmed struck in the very first over, dismissing opener Matthew Short. In the following over, Mustafizur Rahman picked up two consecutive wickets, forcing Australia into an unprecedented and embarrassing cricketing record.

From the Record Books: For the first time in ODI history, Australia lost three wickets before opening their run account (0 runs for 3 wickets).
With Taskin’s raw pace and Mustafizur’s lethal cutters, Bangladesh seized complete control of the match during the Powerplay. Reduced to a dismal 81 for 6, Australia found temporary salvation in a crucial 103-run seventh-wicket partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett. Rain eventually halted the Australian innings at 187 for 8 in 42 overs. Both Taskin and Mustafizur finished with impressive figures of 3 wickets each.
The DLS Target and the Tigers’ Chase
Following a rain delay of nearly two and a half hours, the target was revised using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to 192 runs from 41 overs.
Bangladesh’s pursuit began with a tremor as opener Tanzid Hasan departed for a duck in the first over. However, Soumya Sarkar (42) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (42) anchored the innings beautifully, weathering the initial storm and laying a solid foundation. Despite minor hiccups in the middle order- with Litton Das scoring a brisk 21 and Mosaddek Hossain falling for 15- young gun Towhid Hridoy and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz showed immense composure.
Match Summary:
Australia: 187/8 (42.0 over, Rain affected). Labuschagne & Bartlett (103-run partnership) |
Bangladesh: 192/5 (DLS Target) in 34.4 over. Towhid Hridoy (40*), Mehidy Miraz (22*) |
Hridoy and Miraz steered the ship home with an unbeaten 51-run sixth-wicket partnership. In the 35th over, skipper Miraz sealed the historic series in emphatic style, smashing Riley Meredith over fine leg for a towering six. Hridoy remained unbeaten on 40 off 55 balls, while Miraz played a captain’s knock of 22 off 22 deliveries.
Dreams into Reality: The Rise of a New Bangladesh
Mustafizur Rahman was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant spell of 3 for 27 in 7 overs, which effectively dismantled the Australian top order. As the winning runs were hit, the packed Mirpur stadium erupted into ecstatic celebrations, marking a historic milestone.
A few years ago, merely competing against a giant like Australia was deemed an achievement for Bangladesh. Today, forcing that same powerhouse into total submission on home soil signals the dawn of a new era. This series victory is no fluke; rather, it is the fruitful result of years of structural development in domestic cricket, the maturity of the core players, and meticulous tactical planning. This historic triumph firmly elevates Bangladesh’s stature on the global cricketing stage.
