Mexico’s President reiterates Defense of Sovereignty, Non-Intervention amid tensions with U.S.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated on Monday that Mexico defends the principle of self-determination of peoples and their sovereignty, when questioned about the cases of Venezuela and Honduras, both currently experiencing tensions with the United States.

During her daily press conference from Mexico City, the president recalled that Mexican foreign policy is guided by respect for sovereignty and non-intervention, and therefore limited her comments.

“Both by conviction and by constitutional mandate, we believe in the self-determination of peoples and their sovereignty,” she emphasized, while insisting that Mexico does not intervene in the internal processes of other nations.

This past weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump declared a total closure of Venezuelan airspace, while prior to the start of elections in Honduras he declared his full support for the country if Nasry Asfura wins, adding that otherwise “the United States will not waste its money.”
