Today, Tuesday, September 29, at the headquarters of the Lima Bar Association (CAL), the Citizens’ Forum “Pro-Crime Laws? Dialogue among Parliamentarians, Experts and Affected Citizens” will be held, featuring a well-rounded panel of specialists such as Carlos Rivera, Erika Solís, Ricardo Soberón and Cruz Silva del Carpio, speakers with extensive experience in defending human rights; and a panel of parliamentarians such as Catherine Palomino, Ernesto Zunini, Fernando García Huby and Cesar Holguin Loaiza.
The Forum seeks to analyze the impact of pro-crime laws and put forward viable proposals for their repeal, based on civil society initiatives. It is organized by the Academic and Cultural Promotion Directorate of the Lima Bar Association (CAL) and the Platform in Defense of Life and Citizen Security. The event is today at 6.00 p.m. in the district of Miraflores, Lima.
Comprehensive security policy with citizen participation
One of the organizers, the Citizens’ Platform in Defense of Life and Security, stated the filing of a motion of censure against Interior Minister Cesar Astudillo, expressly stating its “recognition of the deputies who have promoted the motion of censure, since this initiative helps place at the center of the national debate the serious insecurity crisis affecting the Peruvian population”, they said
“The increase in homicides, contract killings, extortion and other forms of crime represent a real risk to the lives and integrity of millions of Peruvians. This situation requires comprehensive, firm and democratic responses,” the statement said.
The group, which brings together dozens of grassroots social organizations, proposes a comprehensive response to combat crime: through the comprehensive reorganization of the National Police, the repeal of pro-crime laws, a State policy against crime and the defense of life as a national priority. “For a safe, democratic Peru with justice for all,” the organizers added.
